Stonework and gardens built for New England seasons

Landscape design-build and year-round care in the Farmington Valley, from a crew based in Avon since 2004.

We are designers, masons and gardeners who work the same six towns every week. We set stone to outlast the frost, plant for clay soil and deer, and come back each season to look after what we built.

A year at Fieldstone

Our year starts in March, when the ground has thawed enough to rake. Here is what a crew does on a care property, season by season.

  1. A freshly edged spring bed of tulips, wallflowers and violas against a clipped hedge

    Spring cleanup

    March to May

    • Clear winter debris and cut back perennials
    • Edge beds and lay fresh mulch
    • First fertilizer and pre-emergent
  2. A mown lawn under old shade trees, with rhododendrons and azaleas around a teak bench

    Summer care

    June to August

    • Weekly mowing at a summer height
    • Hand-weeding and deadheading
    • Shrub and hedge shaping
  3. A raked pile of fallen maple leaves at the foot of a tree on a green lawn

    Fall cleanup

    September to November

    • Aeration and overseeding
    • Leaf cleanups until the oaks let go
    • Cut back beds and protect shrubs
  4. A snow-covered garden path between evergreen shrubs

    Winter snow

    December to February

    • Plowing on a set route
    • Shoveled walks and steps
    • Pet-safe ice melt on stone
