Design & build

The designer who walks your yard draws the plan, orders the plants and stands on site while our crew builds it. Nothing gets lost between the drawing and the dirt.

What we design and build

Planting design

A planting plan built around what already grows well on your lot, with layers that bloom from April to frost and hold their shape in winter.

  • Native and deer-resistant palettes
  • Scaled plan with a plant list
  • Phasing if you want to build over two seasons
Best planted April to June, or September and October

Garden beds

New beds cut with clean edges, the soil loosened and amended, then planted and mulched in the same visit.

  • Bed layout and edging
  • Compost and soil amendment
  • Planting, mulch and first watering
Built April to October

Landscape lighting

Low-voltage LED lighting on paths, steps and trees, with warm color and fixtures aimed so you see the garden and not the bulb.

  • Path, step and tree lighting
  • Transformer on a timer
  • A night walk-through to aim fixtures
Installed March to December

Drainage

Wet basements and soggy lawns usually come down to where roof water goes. We find the path and give it somewhere better to go.

  • Downspout and surface drains
  • Dry creek beds in river stone
  • Regrading and rain gardens
Built April to November

Perennials go in at the depth they grew in the pot, never deeper.

How a design project runs

Most projects take four to eight weeks from the first walk to the last plant. You get a fixed price before we break ground.

  1. 1

    Site walk

An hour on the property with a designer. We look at light, soil, slope and how you use the yard. Free.

  2. 2

    Concept plan

Two layout options with photos of the plants and materials, and a ballpark price. $450, credited to the build.

  3. 3

    Final design and proposal

One scaled plan, a plant list, and a fixed-price proposal with a start date.

  4. 4

    Build

Our own crew, led by the designer, usually in one to three weeks.

  5. 5

    First-season check-in

We come back in the first summer to adjust, replace anything that failed, and tune the lighting.
